What “Trauma-Informed” Actually Means

Being trauma-informed is not a technique. It is a way of seeing people.

A trauma-informed clinician understands that many of the behaviors, thought patterns, and emotional responses that bring someone to therapy are not character flaws — they are adaptations. The nervous system learned to protect itself. The mind built walls because it had to.

Pedro Michael Valdez IV built his entire clinical approach around this understanding.

“Most people who come to me have been surviving something for a long time,” Pedro explains. “My job is not to fix them. It is to help them see that what they developed to survive does not have to define the rest of their life.”

A Background Built for This Work

Pedro holds a Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology, with a concentration in trauma and personality disorders. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in International Psychology, with a research focus on psychopathy and trauma.

His clinical work extends beyond the therapy room. Pedro has consulted for organizations in South Africa and the Philippines, and has worked alongside medical schools in the United States — training professionals to recognize trauma responses in high-pressure environments.

This global perspective shapes how he works with every client. Whether you are a first responder carrying the weight of the job, a child struggling in school, or an adult navigating a life transition, Pedro meets you where you are — not where a textbook says you should be.

Who Pedro Works With

Adapt and Prevail LLC serves a wide range of individuals and families:

  • Children and adolescents (7–17) — behavioral, emotional, developmental support and trauma treatment
  • Adults 18+ — individual therapy, psychological assessments, life transitions and trauma treatment
  • First responders — PTSD, occupational stress, and burnout
  • Medical personnel — compassion fatigue and resilience
  • Military and veterans — combat trauma and reintegration

He also provides expert witness services and psychological assessments for legal proceedings — a specialized area where his forensic background and clinical precision work together.

A Safe Place to Begin

One of the things clients mention most often is how quickly they feel safe in Pedro’s sessions.

“He creates a safe and supportive environment where I always feel heard, understood, and respected.” — Volvore Odonto, verified client.

That safety is not accidental. It is built deliberately — through consistency, honesty, and a clinical approach that never rushes the process.

Healing is not linear. Pedro knows that. And he will be there for every step of it.
